Gunston
Gunston, named after George Mason's historic home, was introduced in 1983, however he would not be given his famous title until 1984. Preformed by several members of faculty of the years, Gunston served as the silly, sarcastic, and even flirtatious mascot of Mason until December 2008.
During his introduction Gunston went under several months of review by both the board of visitors and the academic administration. This resulted in Mason introducing the unnamed mascot randomly at a basketball game in February of 1997, gauging audience reaction before officially introducing Gunston in November of that year.
Despite quickly becoming well beloved by Mason's student body, follwing Mason's success in the 2006 March Madness discussion by the board of vistors became circulating regarding replacing Gunston with a more "serious" Mascot. As a big green monster, Gunston may have represented the spirit of the university, but to the board of visitors he was not the image they university needed to present. Inevitably Gunston would be removed as Mason's mascot in December of 2008, ending his over 2 decade run.
