Student Activism and Policy Change at GMU

The history of GMU’s diversity policies cannot be discussed without acknowledging the role of student activism. Over the years, student organizations and movements have led the charge in pushing the university to adopt more inclusive policies, address racial inequalities, and promote social justice.

Theme of Student Activism

  • Student Protest Movements (2000s-Present): GMU students have long been active in pushing for change, and student led activism played a significant role in advancing DEI policies. From protests related to the Black Lives Matter movement to calls for gender and sexual orientation inclusivity, student organizations have continuously worked to hold the administration accountable for ensuring a diverse and welcoming environment.

  • Impact of Protests and Movements: One of the most powerful moments in GMU's recent history was the student-driven Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests of the 2010s. These protests not only reflected national calls for racial justice but also demanded concrete changes in GMU’s policies regarding racial equity, student support, and faculty diversity. In response to these movements, GMU formed the President’s Task Force on Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence in 2020, which focused on addressing systemic racism and promoting equity across campus.

  • Students as Catalysts for Change: In addition to BLM protests, GMU students have consistently advocated for the university to adopt more inclusive policies for LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. Their activism led to the introduction of gender-neutral bathrooms, changes in the admissions process to encourage more diverse applicants, and new academic programs focusing on diversity and inclusion.
