George Mason Statue

The George Mason statue located on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University stands as an iconic tribute to the university’s namesake and his enduring legacy as a Founding Father and the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. The statue's creation and placement followed a thoughtful and deliberate timeline, reflecting the university’s growing identity and historical pride.

Commissioned in the late 1990s, the statue was designed and sculpted by Wendy M. Ross, a renowned artist known for her detailed public monuments. The bronze statue was completed and officially unveiled in April 1996. It depicts George Mason seated on a bench, offering a contemplative and approachable pose that invites interaction. In his right hand, he holds a copy of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, and to his side are symbolic items including books and a tricorne hat—each detail intentionally chosen to reflect Mason's influence on American political thought and constitutional history.

Originally installed in the heart of campus, the statue was located near the Johnson Center, the main hub of student life. As the university expanded and construction projects reshaped the layout of the Fairfax campus, the statue was carefully relocated to a more prominent and visible position. Today, it stands just outside the entrance to the Johnson Center, along the university’s central plaza. This location allows it to be a focal point for students, visitors, and ceremonial events.

Over the years, the statue has become a beloved landmark and a symbol of academic pride. It is common for students to pose with the statue for graduation photos, rub its foot for good luck before exams, or gather nearby during university events. Its presence not only honors George Mason's legacy but also reflects the university's commitment to freedom, education, and civic responsibility.

The journey of the statue—from concept to creation, placement, and relocation—represents more than the history of a sculpture. It tells the story of a growing university community embracing its roots, celebrating its values, and creating traditions around a figure whose ideas helped shape the nation.
