Dr. James M. Shea hired in the fall of 1966 by Dean Robert C. Krug in order to fill vacancies after faculty resignations the year prior, as well as Mason's expansion to a four-year institution.

Dr. Shea graduated from the University of Virginia in 1960 and took his doctorate at Cornell. Originally teaching in Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana before being hired at George Mason.

Dr. Shea traveled from Louisiana by bus since he did not own a car. Dean Krug also recalls lending Dr. Shea a coat, since he did not own one.
