Memory and Legacy

This exhibit explores and preserves Dr. Lorraine Brown's legacy. Her impact on George Mason Univeristy has often been left out of the broad historical narrative of the institution. From activism, teaching, to archival work, Brown played a key role in shaping the university and putting George Mason on the map.

Her support for students and commitment to representation reflects radical empathy. She met the students where they were and helped them feel seen in the large George Mason community. Lorraine gave much effort to build inclusive spaces not only in her classroooms but also in the archvies. We exist and feel the spaces she helped generate across campus today. Remembering her is part of remembering how George Mason became the university it is today.
