Title

Crist enlists in the Union Army

Subject

Enlistment in the 55th Pennsylvania Infantry

Description

On February 19, 1864, Solomon Crist enrolled in Company K, 55th Pennsylvania Infantry in Bedford, PA. He mustered in as a Private at Harrisburg, PA, on March 2nd, 1864. He was 6 feet tall with blue eyes and light hair. His age was recorded as forty-two, a figure consistent with the age listed in the 1850 Census. He was probably born in 1822. However, forty-two is old for an infantry enlistee. His enlistment and the Union’s acceptance of it speak to the War’s impact on the farm economy, which was depressed, and the high casualty rate in the Union Army, which meant the Union Army would take almost anyone.
