<text>The September 11, 2001 attacks had a profound impact on the George Mason University community. Many students and faculty had personal connections to the events, given the university’s proximity to Washington, D.C., and the Pentagon. In the immediate aftermath, GMU, like much of the nation, was marked by shock and mourning. The university strengthened its academic focus on national security and conflict resolution, with faculty contributing to discussions on counterterrorism, international relations, and global security policies.

In response to the tragedy, GMU established the annual Mason Nation 9/11 Day of Service, encouraging students to honor the victims through volunteer work and community engagement.</text>
