<text>This is an article from the Broadside newspaper which explains the nepotism rule that affected Dr. Brown. The newspaper team did further research on the situation to provide better understanding for readers who had been following the situation.

This is the rule that forced Dr. Brown’s resignation which has been an ordinance at GMU since its inception:
“The employment of person from the same economic unit shall be dismissed and exceptions shall be made only after submission for approval in writing has been made to the President and approved by him. When such employment is deemed necessary, the following conditions shall apply:
1.	No member of an immediate family may be a supervisor of another member.
2.	Two members of a family may not be employed as academic personnel in the same academic or administrative unit or department, except in those instances where the husband and wife are both academically qualified members of a research team.”

Dr. Brown sent a written request to President Shannon asking to extend her teaching term to the end of the next academic year, which was refused.
