The nearly two thousand Union prisoners captured in the battle were kept in a field near the battlefield behind Confederate lines that night. To eliminate any fear that the college would become an independent university, Mann included a clause that would allow the branch college to only offer 2 years of collegiate education. This clause also mentioned that there would only be instructional facilities. The passing of this allowed for the legal construction and authority for a permanent college.
