He mustered in as a Private at Harrisburg, PA, on March 2nd, 1864. He was 6 feet tall with blue eyes and light hair. His age was recorded as forty-two, a figure consistent with the age listed in the 1850 Census. He was probably born in 1822. However, forty-two is old for an infantry enlistee. His enlistment and the Union’s acceptance of it speak to the War’s impact on the farm economy, which was depressed, and the high casualty rate in the Union Army, which meant the Union Army would take almost anyone. Title A name given to the resource Crist enlisted in the Pennsylvania Militia Subject The topic of the resource Solomon Crist in the Pennsylvania militia Description An account of the resource On July 5th, 1863, the day after the Battle of Gettysburg ended and Lee’s Army began its retreat from Pennsylvania, Solomon Crist enlisted as a private from Marietta in the Pennsylvania militia’s Independent Battalion. He was one of eleven men from Marietta who all enlisted on the same day and marched 60 miles to the militia’s rendezvous point. The battalion was part of a statewide mobilization of militia in response to the Confederate Army’s invasion of Pennsylvania. Solomon served for ninety days until October 3rd, 1863. To eliminate any fear that the college would become an independent university, Mann included a clause that would allow the branch college to only offer 2 years of collegiate education. This clause also mentioned that there would only be instructional facilities. The passing of this allowed for the legal construction and authority for a permanent college.
