He was one of eleven men from Marietta who all enlisted on the same day and marched 60 miles to the militia’s rendezvous point. The battalion was part of a statewide mobilization of militia in response to the Confederate Army’s invasion of Pennsylvania. Solomon served for ninety days until October 3rd, 1863. Title A name given to the resource Crist enlists in the Union Army Subject The topic of the resource Enlistment in the 55th Pennsylvania Infantry Description An account of the resource On February 19, 1864, Solomon Crist enrolled in Company K, 55th Pennsylvania Infantry in Bedford, PA. He mustered in as a Private at Harrisburg, PA, on March 2nd, 1864. He was 6 feet tall with blue eyes and light hair. His age was recorded as forty-two, a figure consistent with the age listed in the 1850 Census. He was probably born in 1822. However, forty-two is old for an infantry enlistee. His enlistment and the Union’s acceptance of it speak to the War’s impact on the farm economy, which was depressed, and the high casualty rate in the Union Army, which meant the Union Army would take almost anyone. Title A name given to the resource Washington Post Article About the Finding of the Federal Theatre Program Collection Subject The topic of the resource Lorraine Brown John O'Conner Federal Theatre Program Description An account of the resource An article in the Washington Post by Doree Lovell was written about Lorraine Brown and her colleague John O’Conner, both English professors at George Mason University. The article starts out by mentioning how the documents from the Federal Theatre Program have been “lost for a quarter of the century.” Lorraine started the search for the materials, “because of a course I taught in American drama. Materials from the 1930s were very scant. When I heard about some unedited play scripts at the Library of Congress, I began slogging around there one day asking questions.” Brown’s determined search landed her in John Cole’s office, the then reference librarian at the Library of Congress. Cole, Brown, and O’Conner set out to Maryland where 900 cubic feet of materials were found in an abandoned airport hangar. The collection was then brought back to Mason: “…in 1974, a research center for the Federal Theatre Project was set up in the George Mason library in Fairfax. The FTP materials have been on permanent loan there by the Library of Congress…” A National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant was given to make an archive possible. Brown is quoted saying the staff had completed, “the phenomenal task of unpacking, analyzing, and cataloging the materials in just three years.” According to assistant curator Louanne Wheeler, 25,000 production photographs, 7,000 play scripts, and 1,645 costume design sketches were amongst the vast number of materials in this collection. Additional funds in the NEH grant were allotted for oral history interviews of surviving actors and directors from the program. Lorraine Brown’s insistence on finding the materials allowed for the FTP materials to be the first collection to be brought to George Mason's Fenwick Library and brought the need for our Special Collections Research Center where currently over 600 collections can be viewed. Title A name given to the resource Strategic Context: Battle of Ream's Station Subject The topic of the resource The forces in play that led to the capture of Solomon Crist in August 1864 from the Union lines around the Bermuda Hundred. Description An account of the resource In August 1864, Grant captured the Weldon Railroad, one of the key supply lines into Richmond, VA. He sent the Army of Potomac’s Second Corps to tear up the Weldon Railroad track heading south. An understrength and overused Second Corps was operating outside of Union lines in an exposed position. On August 24, 1864, Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to attack the Union Second Corps while it was outside the Union lines around Petersburg. Lee sent a Confederate Corps south to attack the Union force from the flank, and to disguise his intentions and divert Grant and the Union Command’s attention, he launched a feint on the Union lines around Richmond on the Bermuda Hundred. Private Solomon Crist and Company K, 55th Pennsylvania Infantry, part of the Union Tenth Corps, had just relieved the Eighteenth Corps on the Bermuda Hundred Line.
